Creating bootsect.dos On A Windows 2000 or XP System That Does Not Have It
This procedure involves stopping the display of the Windows 2000 XP boot menu and then restoring it so you may wish to perform a system backup first.
- Copy C:\boot.ini to C:\boot.bak (boot.ini will be modified later).
- Using another computer with the operating system you want to boot to (Windows 9X DOS or DOS) create a boot disk if you do not have one already.
- Copy the sys.com file on the computer you used to create the boot disk to the boot disk if it is not already there.
- Configure the boot disk to allow for CD-ROM access from your Windows 2000 or XP computer.
- Boot the Windows 2000 or XP computer from the boot disk.
- At the A:\ prompt enter sys C:.
- Insert the Windows 2000 or XP CD into your CD-ROM drive and change to the the I386 directory.
- From the X:\I386 prompt where X is the letter of your CD-ROM drive Enter winnt and press enter.
- Follow the on screen prompts until a copying files screen is displayed. Note the files copied at this phase in the setup are placed in a temporary directory. The windows and profiles directory are changed later.
- Press control+alt+del or your system’s reset button to abort the setup (system will now have a revised boot menu with a new default choice for resuming the Windows 2000 or XP setup).
- Boot from the boot disk.
- Change to the C: drive.
- At the C:\ prompt enter copy boot.bak boot.ini (will replace modified boot.ini file with backup).
- Reboot to Windows 2000 or XP and delete the temporary directory created by the aborted setup.
